The porcelain at Althorp is a testimony of the Spencers’ continued interest in collecting over many generations.
The extensive collection is quite comprehensive, covering Oriental porcelain, Chinese export porcelain made for the European market, as well as most continental and British factories of the 18th and 19th centuries.
It provides a wonderful opportunity to compare products from various factories and locations, as well as to illustrate the transfer of influences from one to the other, and the development of styles.
The Meissen Flower Bowl (seen in the gallery below) was bought by the Hon. John Spencer for 10 guineas in 1745.
